YUGADI - MUDNAKUDU CHINNASWAMY's Kannada poem YUGADI ಯುಗಾದಿ

Kannada original: YUGADI ಯುಗಾದಿ

Poet: MUDNAKUDU CHINNASWAMY

English translation: S. JAYASRINIVASA RAO

YUGADI

For this immortal earth

what’s a year anyway,

when at every Spring

earth’s riches bloom.

For this unending time,

we have unearthed a beginning

and named it,

a new year to coddle and pamper.

Mango blossoms and neem shoots,

fragrance of fresh blooms,

clear sunlight has the sky in heat,

would it pair with the ocean and conceive?

Only when the heated-up earth is cooled and soaked,

and the plough’s keen edge breaks the ground,

and seeds are sown,

will Spring arise in our hearts.
