BADALU ಬದಲು -- SUBRAYA CHOKKADY'S TULU POEM "BADAL"

Here is a Kannada translation of a Tulu poem, ‘Badal’ by Subraya Chokkadi. Though I am a Mangalorean (technically!), I only spent five years of my life in Mangalore. During those five years, I learnt to speak Tulu fluently, but slowly lost it over the years after moving away from Mangalore. While looking for the first novel in Tulu, Sati Kamale, I stumbled upon the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy website, where I found the novel, and I thought I’d read some Tulu poems too and bought a book of poems called Noodu Kabitelu. While reading the poems, I discovered that I actually hadn’t lost all of my Tulu. While translating this poem, for a couple of words I sought help from my father, who was born and brought up in Mangalore and speaks Tulu fluently. And I also got help from my brother’s colleague, Krishnaprakash Ullithaya. Thanks to both. Tulu has a particular spoken lilt to it, which I hope I have managed to capture in the Kannada translation.

ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೆ: ಎಸ್ ಜಯಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ರಾವ್

ಬದಲು

ನಮ್ಮ ಈ ಹಳೆಯ ದೊಡ್ದ ಬಂಗ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ

ಇಲಿಗಳ ಕಾಟವೋ ಕಾಟ

ಅಂತ್ಹೇಳಿ ಒಂದು ಬೆಕ್ಕನ್ನು ತಂದೆವು

ಅದು ಬಣ್ಣ ಬಣ್ಣದ ಬೆಕ್ಕು -- ಬರೀ ಪಾಪದ್ದು

ನೋಡ್ಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಭಾರಿ ಚಂದ

ಕೆಲಸದ ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಬರೀ ಬೂಸು

ಇಲಿಗಳೇ ಅದನ್ನು ಹೆದ್ರಿಸ್ಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಶುರುಮಾಡಿದವು

ಹೀಗಾಯ್ತಲ್ಲ ಅಂತ್ಹೇಳಿ ಒಂದು

ದಪ್ಪ ರೋಮದ ಕಪ್ಪು ಗಂಡು ಬೆಕ್ಕನ್ನು ತಂದೆವು

ಬಣ್ಣ ಬಣ್ಣದ ಬೆಕ್ಕೂ ಕಪ್ಪು ಬೆಕ್ಕೂ

ಬೆಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ 

ತವುಡು ತಿನ್ನುವವನು ಹೋಗಿ ಹೊಟ್ಟು ತಿನ್ನುವವನು

ಬಂದ ಹಾಗೆ ಆಯಿತು

ಅವೆರಡೇ ತಾಪತ್ರಯಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾತಾಡ್ಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಶುರುಮಾಡಿದವು

ಕಚ್ಚಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಶುರುಮಾಡಿದವು

ಜಗಳ ಮಾಡ್ಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಶುರುಮಾಡಿದವು

ಸಾಮಾನುಗಳನ್ನು ಆಚೀಚೆ ಬಿಸಾಡ್ಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಶುರುಮಾಡಿದವು

ಇದರ ನಡುವೆ ಅವುಗಳಿಗೆ

ಇಲಿಗಳ ನೆನೆಪಾದರೂ ಆಗುವುದು ಹೇಗೆ?

ಇಲಿಗಳಿಗೀಗ ಬೆಕ್ಕುಗಳ ಜಗಳ ಬಿಡಿಸುವ ಕೆಲಸ

ಸಾಮನುಗಳನ್ನು ಅರಸಿ ತೆಗೆದು

ಜಾಗ್ರತೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಕೆಲಸ
