Moving slightly away from the norm of this blog, here is my English translation of a Hindi poem by Rakesh K. Mishra.
When I read Rakesh K. Mishra’s Hindi poem Koi aur Kaam on Facebook, and my friend Kamalakar Bhat’s excellent Kannada translation of it, I was utterly fascinated by the surreal images and the poet’s flights of imagination. I just couldn’t resist translating Koi aur Kaam into English. I hope my English translation has done justice to the original Hindi poem. Here’s my English translation titled Something else perhaps.

At the
least you shouldn’t have
taken up
writing …
You should
have done something else perhaps
like
Teaching
little children
Selling
flowers
Guiding
wandering stars on to their paths
Narrating
stories to fish
Infusing colours
into dreams
Building houses
on clouds
Salvaging a
crumbling bridge
Learning
the language of butterflies
Writing
love-letters in vanishing tongues
Reading out
a book to the girl who cannot see
Befriending
the old postman down the lane
Composing
dirges to frequently perishing birds
You could
have chosen any of these things to do
But you
chose to do the world’s saddest job …

कोई और काम
कम से कम लिखने का काम तो
नहीं ही करना चाहिए था
करना चाहिए था कोई और काम
जैसे छोटे-छोटे बच्चों को पढ़ाने का काम
फूल बेचने का काम
भटके हुए तारों को रास्ता दिखाने का काम
मछलियों को कहानियाँ सुनाने का काम
सपनों में रंग भरने का काम
बादलों में घर बनाने का काम
किसी टूटे हुए पूल को बचाने का काम
तितलियों की भाषा सीखने का काम
लुप्त हो रही भाषाओं में प्रेम-पत्र लिखने का काम
एक लड़की जो देख नहीं सकती उसके के लिए किताब पढ़ने का काम
गली के बूढ़े डाकिया से दोस्ती करने का काम
लगातार मर रही चिड़ियों के लिए शोकगीत लिखने का काम
इनमें से कोई भी काम तुम चुन सकते थे
पर तुमने चुना है दुनिया का सबसे उदास काम...
