Dear friends ... here is my Kannada translation of an English poem, PROMENADE, by the new generation Kenyan poet, CLIFTON GACHAGUA (b. 1987) ... the poems in Clifton Gachegua’s collection, "The Madman at Kilifi," are powerful and bold and show us a different Kenya grappling with problems and concerns of modernity ...

ವಿಹಾರದಾರಿ

 

ಕೆಲ ಸತ್ಯಗಳು, ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ನೀವು ಬೆಳಕಿಗೆ ಅಡ್ಡವಾಗಿ ಹಿಡಿದಾಗ,

ಅವು ಬಣ್ಣ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.

 

ನಾನೊಬ್ಬ ನೀರಿನ ನಕಾಶೆಗಾರ, ನಡೆಯುವೆ ನಾನು

ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಒಂದಿಂಚು ಆಳವಾಗಿರುವುದಾದರೆ ಮಾತ್ರ.

 

ಒಂದರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ, ನಾನೊಬ್ಬ ನಾಯಿ,

ಇಲ್ಲವಾ ನಾಯಿಯನ್ನು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಲೇಡಿ.

Certain truths, you hold them against the light, 

and they change colour. 

 

I am a cartographer of water.  I
walk on it as long as it is an inch deep. 

 

In a sense, I am either the dog, 

or the lady with the dog.
