ನಾನು ನೋಡುವೆ, ಕಾಯುವೆ NAANU NO:DUVE, KAAYUVE - KRYSTYNA MILOBEDZKA'S 'I LOOK AND WAIT'

Dear friends ... I have taken this big risk by translating this poem by the Polish poet, KRYSTYNA MILOBEDZKA (b. 1932) ... Stanislaw Baranczak, another influential Polish poet and writer, singled out her poems for their “dramatic ungramaticalness,” as they speak about elementary human relationships – between woman and man, mother and child – “in a language that is ‘being thought’” ...

Commenting on her sparse diction Milobedzka herself says, “I think it would be best if each writer could invent their own language to write down the very little they have to say.  Only the necessary words.”

Elzbieta Wojcik-Leese, who translated Milobedzka’s poems, says that with Milobedzka, the “Polish language is coaxed into poems revealing its inner energies.” “With Milobedzka’s poems the usual browsing through dictionaries, mental and printed, turns into an etymological – and existential – search.  Yet this portmanteau parsing is far from extravagant: her wordings are simple, seemingly ordinary.” “I look, intensely, at and for.  The looking becomes hearing; the hearing turns into associating, not only in my readings of the Polish originals, but also in my translations.  Milobedzka shows me that ‘listen’ inhabits the word ‘glisten,’ where I never saw it before.” Elzbieta Wojcik-Leese ‘invents her own translated language to convey Milobedzka’s experimental poems into English ... more collaborations than translations... ‘

I do so much want to capture what the poet wants to convey ... Polish to English to Kannada is a long journey and a giant linguistic-cultural leap ... I am not sure though ... but Milobedzka’s poems are fascinating as poems themselves and opens up possibilities for conveying thoughts and ideas differently ....
