ಹಕ್ಕಿಯೊಂದು ಹಾರುತ್ತೆ HAKKIYONDU HAARUTTE - CEES NOOTEBOOM'S 'A BIRD FLIES'

This ‘untitled’ poem by the famed Dutch poet CEES NOOTEBOOM is taken from his 2016 collection MONNIKSOOG (English translation published in 2018 as MONK’S EYE [Seagull]).  The poems in MONK’S EYE are about two islands – He began this series of poems on the Dutch island of Schiermonnikoog and finished them on the Spanish island of Minorca ... “But they are also about islands as an archetype, about the serenity that we can find on beaches and amid dunes, the sea sweeping imperturbably among us.”  These poems are also accompanied by Sunandini Banerjee’s lovely digital collages.  One such collage accompanies this poem, which I have attempted to translate into Kannada ... the poems as such do not have titles, but I have taken the first phrase of the first line and given it as the title of this poem ...

ಹಕ್ಕಿಯೊಂದು ಹಾರುತ್ತೆ

 

ಹಕ್ಕಿಯೊಂದು ಹಾರುತ್ತೆ, ಗರಿಯೊಂದು ಉದುರುತ್ತೆ.

ಈ ಘಟನೆ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಂಡದ ತಕ್ಕಡಿಯ ಸಮತೋಲನವ 

ಬದಲಿಸುತ್ತೆ.  ಮೀನೊಂದು ಈಜುತ್ತಾ ಇದೆ,

ನೀರು ತರಂಗಗಳನ್ನೆಬ್ಬಿಸುತ್ತೆ, ಈಗ ಲೋಕದ

 

ಸಮತೋಲನ ಏನಾಗಿದೆ?  ಗುರುತುಗಳು 

ತಕ್ಕಡಿಯ ಮೈಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ, ಲೋಕದ ಮೈಯಲ್ಲಲ್ಲ, 

ಈ ಪ್ರಶ್ಣೆಯ ಗುಣವೃದ್ಧಿಯಾಗುತ್ತೆ.  

ನೀನು ನೀನೇ ಆಗಿರುವೆ

ಯೋಚಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕೂ ಮೊದಲೇ.

 

ಆದರೆ? ಕವನಗಳು ನಿಭಾಯಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಬೇಕು

ಪ್ರಶ್ಣೆಗುರುತುಗಳಿಲ್ಲದೇ, ಅವು ಮರುಳನ್ನು

ಪಳಗಿಸಬೇಕು, ಅಲ್ಲಗಳೆಯಬಾರದು, ಅವು

ಶೂನ್ಯಾಲೊಚನೆಗಳಿಂದ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಬೇಕು

 

ಅವು ಅವುಗಳಾಗುವವರೆಗೂ.
